Sydney Guided Walks - Balmain
Balmain Walk
The choice is yours:
Balmain Town Hall 2 hours or
Gladstone Park 2 hours
Both walks contain a lot more than can be mentioned here - very
enjoyable and fascinating walks.
Balmain Town Hall 1.5 hours
This special suburb has
developed on one of the first land grants in the colony.
William Balmain was granted 550 acres by Governor Hunter in
1800.
Why did Dr. Balmain sell the land after only 15 months,
to a man who had never resided in Australia, for just 5
shillings?
This answer and many other fascinating facts about the suburb of
Balmain will be revealed during this walk.
We will trace Balmain from its early years as a place to hunt to
its development as a
heavily industrialised and maritime suburb to its present day
'gentrification'.
Through it all, Balmain still retains its special atmosphere,
full of history, people and life.
This walk can start at either -
Balmain Town Hall next door to the James Barnett designed Post
Office and Court House
from there we meander down the hill past cottages, cafes, pubs
and churches,
weaving in and out of Darling Street to finish as the very
historic Balmain Watch House.

Gladstone Park 2 hours
Start at Gladstone Park, which has something very surprising
beneath it,
and take a loop around the backstreets past the endless variety
of workers cottages,
past the ornate Exchange Hotel and we turn at the Grande Balmain
Post Office
and Court House to walk down cosmopolitan Darling Street to
finish at the Watch House.

KNOWLEDGE, FRIENDSHIP AND SOCIAL INTERACTION ARE THE GREAT OUTCOMES OF A WALK WITH SYDNEY
